Good Drive, Bad Software! Did you? Yes No. Stuart V. Overall Review: Makes me wonder if firmware is written by the same people Pros: Large Drive Easy Set Up Recognized Software actually practical I dont use it though Cons: Only thing I can complain about is every time it is plugged into a computer mac at least "WD Smart" disk loads up, I noticed if you install their software it goes away, just a quick eject and its gone however a little annoying at times.

Gerhard A. Pros: It Works. It not to big. Cons: None Overall Review: Makes a little sound when starting up. Did you find this review helpful? Donald W. Justin Y. Sandy D. Pros: Easy to install, easy automatic or drag and drop backups. Return Policies Return for refund within: 30 days Return for replacement within: 30 days. In his case he actually lifted the clock pin on the flash chip. He then applied the update after reconnecting the clock pin. Support Downloads Knowledge Base.

German Spanish Italian French. HGST Support. Any idea of what I can do? If I let windows initialize it, will I lose everything inside the drive? Just to update this thread… I ran the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic on the desktop and the hard disk passed both the tests. I want to give as much informations as I can to anyone who wants to try to help me with this mess… and so… here you are a screenshot of what HxD found: sector1 is full of beautiful zeros… It should mean that my data are not hardware-encrypted… right?

When plugged into a eSata docking station, sector 1 is full of zeros… so, the sick hard disk, showing only zeros inside sector 1 while plugged into the same docking station obviously, because its bridge board is not working , does not mean anything…. Drive lock - Gain peace of mind knowing that your data is protected from unauthorized access or theft with password protection and bit hardware-based encryption. Illuminated capacity gauge - See at a glance how much space is available on your drive.

USB 2. Power miser - My Book external drives are designed to save energy. Planet friendly - We designed a small retail box from recycled materials to minimize waste. We encourage you to recycle it. As others have noted, the drive is formatted FAT at the factory, so you'll need to reformat it if you want to use NTFS - do remember to copy over the tools to another drive first if you want to use them.

They're also decently sturdy; I accidentially knocked the firs t one off my desk not long after I bought it, but it took no damage and is still running smoothly 8 months later. The drive goes to standby automatically when not in use to save power and reduce heat, so it will take a few seconds to get it spun up after a period of inactivity. Also, USB 2. The one issue I feel is missing is a shut off switch.

At times I would like it off while the PC is on. I liked the style of the case -- looks like a book. I liked the automatic power-on and power-off feature -- it is very handy so I don't have to remember to flip a switch every time. I also liked the extra capacity it provide me for my backup procedures.

I rated this good instead of excellent because of the following major annoyance: I did not like the fact that the main menu on the hard drive had an option to "copy" all the trial software to make a backup copy.

I thought this was a good option in case I wanted to try some of it in the future. However, the option was a complete lie. It took me over an hour to uninstall all the stuff. I don't know if I will ever go back and look at the software again with underhand ed tricks like that. This is a great upgrade for the Vista operating system.

I really like Western Digital My Book. I was able to transfere everything thing from my mg to the 1tb in a push of the finger.
